Standards with encouragement.

In their message following the 2024 Gold Star Grand Finals, the founders described a balance: musical standards that encourage musicians to develop, alongside a supportive environment that recognises progress. They also emphasised the friendships, cultural exchange and shared memories that music can create.

For musicians, that means serious preparation, meaningful opportunities to perform and a community that extends beyond competition results.

Different stages. A connected purpose.

The Music Festival brings musicians together to perform, listen and receive feedback. The International Competition offers an assessed pathway through preliminary rounds and Grand Finals, with selected performance opportunities. Artists & Learning creates space for technique, interpretation and musical exchange. Each serves a distinct part of a musician’s development.

On the concerto stage

In May 2026, Ian appeared as concerto soloist with the Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in Kuala Lumpur.

Music beyond the recital

His collaborative projects include Debonair, which brought five concert grand pianos together on one stage. His compositions include Loving Life, premiered at the 2018 Asia Pacific Arts Festival, and Wind Gust(s), a required work for the Kingsburg International Piano Competition in China.

An international perspective.

Ian’s work as a performer, educator and adjudicator has taken him across the United States, China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. These experiences shape his artistic leadership at Claviera Music and his approach to developing young musicians.

Students he has mentored have performed at Carnegie Hall and gained admission to leading music institutions, including the Eastman School of Music and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
